Many apocalyptic events have been taking place during the current war in Ukraine. The most traumatic of them are war crimes committed by Russian soldiers against civilians and children. In this icon, Christ in the arms of the Mother of God is depicted as a child, but with an adult look. In Ukraine, now many children have lost the opportunity to be children. And the Mother of God does not look at the Child, her face is turned towards the viewer. She is with Ukrainian women, understanding them like no one else, like the Mother of God and like a woman whose Child was brutally killed.

Icons on Ammunition Boxes ™

From 2015, Ukrainian artists Sofia Atlantova and Olexander Klimenko have been using wooden fragments from ammunition boxes abandoned by Russian soldiers on the battle fields in Ukraine to paint icons and donating all sale proceeds to mobile hospitals that provide urgent medical care to wounded Ukrainian soldiers and civilians. Since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in late February, 2022, their work remains more relevant than ever.
