According to a legend, when the city was invaded, seven arrows hit the icon of the Mother of God located in one church and a miracle happened – the Mother of God on the icon covered her chest with her hands. The seven arrows refer to the gospel phrase addressed to the Mother of God, “And the weapon will go through your heart.” Before this icon we pray for reconciliation, softening the evil. The Mother of God on this board seems to be with us, in our sad reality, together with the Ukrainians she grieves for the losses and, just like us, tries to cover herself with her hands, but the evil weapon still pierces her heart.

Icons on Ammunition Boxes ™

From 2015, Ukrainian artists Sofia Atlantova and Olexander Klimenko have been using wooden fragments from ammunition boxes abandoned by Russian soldiers on the battle fields in Ukraine to paint icons and donating all sale proceeds to mobile hospitals that provide urgent medical care to wounded Ukrainian soldiers and civilians. Since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in late February, 2022, their work remains more relevant than ever.
